Oriel Science 2023 Roundup

2023 is drawing to an end in a flurry of holiday events, twinkling lights and festive cheer! We at Oriel Science are celebrating an incredible years’ work filled with so many things to be joyful for. In the spirit of the most wonderful time of the year, we are rounding up the big achievements 2023 has brought.

Visitors

In our city centre exhibition space, we welcomed 3700 of you throughout 2023. 2250 of that number was just since July, when our brand-new IMAGING exhibition opened for the first time! It was a pleasure to introduce the 45% of visitors who had never been to Oriel Science before as well as say “welcome back” to everyone who has visited us before.

Exhibitions

If you visited us more than once, you may have seen the three different exhibitions we held this year. Firstly, we had our COVID-19 Response exhibition which presented Swansea University’s response to the pandemic, including new ventilator designs, manufacturing hand sanitiser, and developing improved treatment regimes. This was held alongside our Movement & Motion exhibition which showed research into glaciers ‘surging’ in the Arctic, hydrogen as a power source for cars, migration from Ireland to Wales, trapping and studying antimatter, innovative techniques to track animals and much more. Our current exhibition: IMAGING, is ongoing and celebrates how Swansea University researchers visualise, capture, and interpret the world within and around us.

Workshops

But that is not all we did! We have worked with almost 1000 primary and secondary school students from 16 local schools delivering 7 different workshops that cover a variety of science subjects. Just some of the subjects included how hydrogen power worked, all about UV rays and sun safety, vehicle momentum and dynamics and much more! But the workshops did not stop in the classroom. We held public workshops throughout the year as well as our Science Corner where the public can work with us on doing some small science experiments which are fun for the whole family.

So, what is next for Oriel Science?

We have a variety of new school workshops that will be available from January 2024!

We are also developing some exciting public workshops and events – a great experience for the whole family!

Finally, some exciting new exhibits will be popping up in the venue for a limited time only so keep an eye on our website and social media for some exciting announcements in 2024!

From the whole Oriel Science team: we want to say a big thank you for your support in 2023. We wish you a Happy New Year and hope to see you in 2024!
