Happy World Oceans Day

What can you find in the Ocean?

There are so many wonderful things within our oceans ranging from the pretty sea anemone to the great white shark! The ocean covers 71% of the earth’s surface. It is the earth’s largest ecosystem and creates half of the oxygen humans breath. There are over 200,000 species living in the ocean and 91% are yet to be classified. Did you know that more than 80% of the ocean floor is yet to be mapped? Although there are so many different species, scientists believe that they are decreasing. This is due to the continued decline in the health of ecosystems and plants and animals cannot evolve fast enough to keep up. The ocean’s delicate balance has also been put in danger due to human interventions such as overfishing and climate change!

What can we do to protect our oceans?

Lots of things are being done to protect the world’s oceans. But there are plenty of things that you can do at home to keep our ocean from being destroyed.

  1. Reduce your carbon footprint. You can do this by doing things like:

    1. Riding your bike to work or school

    2. Turn the lights off when leaving a room

    3. Buy more sustainably caught seafood

2. Use plastic-free alternatives like shampoo bars and bars of soap rather than shower gel.

3. Avoid ocean harming products like certain types of cosmetics and coral jewellery.

4. Take your rubbish home with you when you go to the beach.

5. Explore the oceans! If you don’t live near the sea then visit your local rivers or lakes. You can also do research online.
